In a world where acts of kindness and dedication often go unnoticed, Birmingham City Schools are taking a moment to celebrate two remarkable individuals who have gone “above and beyond the call of duty” in their roles. Doniell Milliner, a teacher and substitute bus driver, and LaKesha Douglas, the district’s Parent and Family Involvement Program Specialist, have shown unwavering commitment to their students and the community.

Doniell Milliner’s story is a testament to the profound impact that educators can have on the lives of their students. Ms. Milliner, who not only teaches but also fills in as a substitute bus driver, recently demonstrated incredible vigilance and compassion. Her extraordinary dedication earned her the “Above and Beyond” recognition.

During one of her bus routes, Ms. Milliner discovered a disturbing note left behind by a student. Instead of dismissing it as a passing concern, she promptly alerted the school personnel. This act of care and quick thinking led to the troubled student receiving the help and guidance they urgently needed.

The Birmingham City Schools community, deeply moved by her actions, praised Doniell Milliner as “truly one of a kind.” Her dedication to the well-being and safety of her students, both in and out of the classroom, serves as an inspiration to all.

LaKesha Douglas, the recipient of October’s “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award,” embodies the very essence of commitment and service to the Birmingham City Schools community. As the district’s Parent and Family Involvement Program Specialist, she plays a vital role in bridging the gap between home and school, ensuring that students receive the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Douglas’s work goes far beyond the scope of her job description. Her nominator aptly described her as someone who “truly embodies what it means to go ‘Above and Beyond.'” She tirelessly provides ongoing support and resources to families throughout the district and the wider community, creating a strong network of support for students on their educational journey.

What truly sets LaKesha Douglas apart is her unwavering commitment to her students and their families. She frequently meets with parents and guardians late into the evenings and on weekends, showing her dedication to their well-being and educational success. This tireless dedication ensures that students have the comprehensive support they need to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

In a world where educators and community leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the future, Doniell Milliner and LaKesha Douglas are shining examples of what can be achieved when one goes “above and beyond the call of duty.” Their commitment and dedication to the students and families of Birmingham City Schools serve as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that individuals can make in their communities.
